Last summer's waif like flower-child, all candy and embroidered slip dresses has had her day. The new look is strong, polished and packed with sex appeal. Squeezed into slinky snake skin, wearing high heels and a skin-tight trouser suit or sporting a seductive wrap-over dress - the vamp is back.
Flesh-baring halter necks, one-shoulder toga dresses and transparent chiffon tops leave little to the imagination this summer. Cleavage is also back in fashion, thanks to the Brazilian bombshell Gisele Bundchen - the model of the moment - who boasts a 36 inch chest and a Bond Girl physique.
The vamp's wardrobe is very much inspired by the 1970's. But this season designers have plundered the chicer elements of the era that style forgot. Instead of ponchos, clogs and Portobello Market, this means YSL-inspired tailoring, scarf prints and expensive animal prints (particularly nude coloured leather and ostrich print). If you wanted to pin a face to the mood it would be that of actress Charlotte Rampling, as opposed to last season's Ali MacGraw.
For women who don't relish the prospect of hot pants and spray-on jeans there is another option. The fashion world has labelled it 'sincere chic' and the essence of it is a neat slim fitting, knee-length skirt teamed with a silk blouse. It has been a long time since the word 'blouse' even entered the fashion lexicon, but it is a key piece for summer - often with a pussy-cat bow or a chiffon scarf flung about the neck. Matching shoes and handbags are also important, suggesting that the wearer has made an effort.
Colours for summer are very pretty and feminine, hot pink, mint green, aquatic blue and sunny yellow, with citrus colours such as orange and lime used as an accent. Pattern is also very popular, swirly geometric patterns, paisleys, gingham and polka dots in lollipop colours inject some fun into fashion, along with the sex-appeal.
